Professor Richard Hayward was appointed Consultant Paediatric Neurosurgeon to GOSH in 1981 and in 2004 became the UK’s first Professor of Paediatric Neurosurgery (University College London - UCL). Since 1994 he has held the appointment of Honorary Consultant Emeritus to The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, London and has been appointed as a Consultant Paediatric Neurosurgeon at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) since 1981.
In addition to GOSH, he has also held consultant positions at St Mary’s Hospital and medical school (now part of Imperial College), London; The National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London; and King Edward VII Hospital London. He has also served as civilian consultant neurosurgeon in The Royal Air Force. He formally retired from regular clinical practice in 2010 but has since worked part-time as Consultant Paediatric Neurosurgeon at GOSH.
